Nero Kane live in Barcelona: Italian ritual folk makes its Spanish debut

Nero Kane in Barcelona on 1 November, with Kaverna at Laut

Nero Kane plays Barcelona on Sunday 1 November at Laut, with Kaverna on the bill. The night before, Halloween, he opens at the Atzavara Club in Sant Feliu de Guíxols. These are his first two concerts in Spain. The Italian singer-songwriter and guitarist arrives with Samantha Stella, the avant-garde artist who has worked alongside him for years, as part of his autumn Ritual Folk Shows, and he brings “For the Love, the Death and the Poetry”, his latest record, released by Subsound Records and named on several best-of-2025 lists.

The visit was overdue. Kane has played Los Angeles, the UK and much of Europe, and Spain remained the gap on the map. That it closes with a Halloween night on the Costa Brava and a Sunday of All Saints in Barcelona looks like a calendar written on purpose.

Churches, castles are Nero Kane’s favourite places

Nero Kane has spent years picking rooms with high ceilings. He has played churches, museums, theatres and festivals: Ancient Echoes in Leipzig, Sonic Rites in Helsinki, Ex Tenebris Lux in Montpellier, Setmana Santa in Toulouse, Church of Crow Doom in Turin, Il Rumore del Lutto in Parma and Fekete Zaj in Hungary. He made his name with the Californian debut of his first album, and three of his records have ended up on year-end lists.

As a support act he has appeared on bills with Zola Jesus, Jozef Van Wissem, Jonathan Hultén, Me And That Man, Xasthur, Marissa Nadler and King Dude. The list runs from dark folk to the edge of metal and explains why his audience doesn’t fit a single scene. With King Dude he has just wrapped a four-date run as special guest, including a stop at Aigle Castle in Switzerland.

On 30 October he supports Messa at the Maison des Choeurs in Montpellier, as part of Ex Tenebris Lux. He played that church in 2023, and being invited back usually means the first time went well.

Taken as a whole, Kane’s autumn has a logic: four dates with King Dude, Aigle Castle among them, Montpellier on the 30th, the two jumps into Spain on the 31st and 1st, and Rome on 10 December, back inside a church. It is a tour that alternates the sacred with the practical, and Spain is the practical part. That does not make it any less interesting.

Swans, Cave, Cash and Nico: the record’s reference points

The names attached to “For the Love, the Death and the Poetry” are Michael Gira (Swans, Jarboe), Nick Cave, Johnny Cash and Nico. Four heavyweights, and any list like that deserves caution until the first chord lands. More useful is how his style gets described: cathartic, desert-like, pastoral, ritual and psychedelic, with arrangements that cross dark western, folk, gothic and the odd experimental touch. Five adjectives is a lot of adjectives, yet they all point the same way: folk that goes after liturgy before it goes after the song.

Anyone arriving without having heard him has a reasonable shortcut in As an Angel’s Voice, the lead single, and in the video for The World Heedless of Our Pain, shot in a castle in France. A live show like this is easier to follow if you have played the record at least once.

Churches and castles are Kane’s favourite places. On 10 December the Waldensian Church in Rome awaits, and his latest video unfolds between stone walls. The two Spanish stops, by contrast, are clubs, with stage lights and ordinary ceilings.

That difference is the question of the show. With no vault or stone to help, the ritual depends on Kane’s voice and guitar and on whatever Samantha Stella brings to the ceremony. It is a stripped-down format with nowhere to hide, which makes it the most honest test the material can face.

Stella is the half of the duo worth watching. She is described only as an avant-garde artist, and that vagueness is the biggest unknown of the live show: what exactly she does on stage is something 1 November will explain better than any article.

The Atzavara has the advantage of timing: Halloween on the Costa Brava turns the date into a party with an alibi. In Spain, 1 November is a day of cemeteries and flowers, and a record titled “For the Love, the Death and the Poetry” could not have asked for a better date.

Why see Nero Kane in Barcelona

There is a simple reason: it is Kane’s first time playing Spain, and debuts only happen once. There is a deeper one. Kane has moved through dark folk, gothic and metal bills without settling fully into any of them, and Barcelona has an audience for each of those corners, even if they don’t always share a room.

Those reference points are an invitation to go, and 1 November will say how much of it holds up live. It is a two-person format that plays best to an attentive room, so anyone planning to film the whole set on a phone will miss a good part of it. Don’t leave it until the last day: the Halloween and All Saints weekend tends to come with a crowded gig calendar.

Laut, Sunday 1 November, with Kaverna. Nero Kane has spent years playing among stone, and this time he comes to a club. Better to hear it that way than not to hear it at all, and better still with the room full.
